I want to start by introducing myself as a mother of three wonderful children, each of whom came into this world in a unique and profound way. These births have not only shaped my family but have transformed me as an individual. As I reflect on the incredible experiences I've had, I also acknowledge how easily the details have faded away, buried under the weight of sleepless nights and the joyful chaos of raising little ones.
My First Birth: A Scheduled C-Section
My journey into motherhood began with the birth of my first child, a breech baby, which led to a scheduled C-section. The experience was a mix of excitement and trepidation. I can recall the sterilized hospital room and the shakiness as they first placed my precious baby in my arms as I was laying on my back in the operation room.
My Second Birth: Attempted Home Birth Turned Successful VBAC
The birth of my second child was a completely different adventure. After I was told that I should expect a second c-section, at 32 weeks I decided to attempt a home birth, a choice that filled me with empowerment and anticipation. It was an incredible journey of preparation, surrounded by supportive doula, midwives, and my loving partner. However, after 4 days of laboring at home I decided to transfer to the hospital, where I successfully achieved a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean). The strength I discovered within myself during this experience was transformative.
My Third Birth: A Rapid and Powerful Home Birth
With my third child, I embarked on another unique journey. This time, my little one decided to make a grand entrance. The birth was rapid, a lightning bolt of intensity and power, and it happened right on my bed at home. It was a whirlwind of emotions, as I marveled at the strength of my body and the miracle of life. I will forever cherish that intimate home birth experience.
The Slow Fade of Memories
As the years went by and my hands grew fuller with the joys and challenges of motherhood, I noticed something happening. The details of these incredible birth experiences, as well as the early years of my children's lives, slowly started to fade. The sharp images turned into blurry snapshots, and the vivid emotions began to blur around the edges.
The More I told my story, the better I was able to preserve it. And so, after my second birth experience I decided to record my birth story and it is a gift I can give my daughter for life. It’s a gift for the mother and a gift for the child as it was a opportunity to share all the details of the birth without any filter to the world.
Documenting the Unforgettable
This is why I encourage you, dear postpartum mothers, to document your birth stories and your children's "firsts." It may seem like a small task in the midst of your busy life, but trust me, it's worth every moment.
Tell the details of your birth experience while they are still fresh in your mind. Process them in an unfiltered space where you can truly process the sequence of events. It is a true gift for mental wellbeing, you physical body, and your soul.
You are embarking on an incredible journey as a mother, one filled with beautiful, challenging, and transformative moments. Your birth stories and your children's "firsts" are a part of your unique narrative. They are the threads that weave the tapestry of your family's history.
So, as you embrace the blur of motherhood, remember that you have the power to preserve these memories. Share your stories, capture the moments, and cherish the love that fills your heart. They are the reminders of the incredible journey you're on, a journey that changes us all in the most beautiful ways.
In care and support,
Nicole
